Valerie Marcil - President
Valerie has been a resident of the Gills Creek watershed for over 20 years. She worked for many years as an archaeologist, and is currently a member of the City of Columbia's Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC).

O. Alicia de Myhrer - Vice President
Alicia is Chair of the Water Quality Committee of the Cary Lake Homeowners' Association. She is Director of Educational Programs of the Reading is Power, International Foundation (501 C3). She lives on Cary Lake in the Town of Arcadia Lakes.

Sam Agee - Secretary is Chairman/CEO of Gateway Hospitality, a hotel management company. He has lived in Columbia for 30 years in the Lake Katharine neighborhood.

Daniel L. Tufford, Ph.D. - Treasurer
Dr. Tufford is on the research faculty in Biological Sciences at the University of South Carolina and has been a resident of the Gills Creek watershed for over 30 years. He has been a board member and treasurer of the Gills Creek Watershed Association since its founding as an organization.

Lewis Kirk - Chair of the Technical Committee
Lewis grew up within walking distance of Gills Creek and spent many hours exploring its environs. He earned a BS in Botany and a Master's in Industrial Education from Clemson. He worked in commercial printing in sales, customer service, and digital prepress. He has been an active volunteer with the Gills Creek Watershed Association.

Tameria Warren - Chair of the Education Committee is the Sustainability Management System Coordinator at Fort Jackson. She is a board member of Sustainable Midlands, the Columbia Urban League Guild, and is the ministry leader for the Genesis Project at Bible Way Church of Atlas Road.

Emily Freeman Jones - Past President of the Gills Creek Watershed Association
Emily Freeman Jones is a landscape architect employed at the University of South Carolina. She lives near Gills Creek below Lake Katharine.

Michael Criss
Mr. Criss is a consulting planner in the midlands who advocates watershed-based land use planning and ecosystem conservation. He has been a board member of the Gills Creek Watershed Association since its founding as an organization.

Judy Timmons is a founding member of the Environmental Stewardship Committee at Forest Lake Presbyterian Church and lives in the Rockbridge Road area of the watershed. She is a member of the GCWA's Education Committee.

Pete Mayers
Pete Mayers has a background in waste water treatment, mechanical maintenance, mechanical engineering, is active in the Rosewood Community Council, a member of the Richland County Airport Commission, and a member of the GCWA.

Julie Mayson is a resident of Arcadia Lakes and serves as the coordinator for the GCWA Adopt-a-Highway project. She is a graduate of Clemson University with a degree in administration management.

Thom Bristol is an environmental scientist with over twelve years of experience in consulting with extensive project work in environmental permitting and compliance for stormwater, wetlands, and water resources. He is a past president of the Upper Rockyford lake homeowners association. He has been involved with the Gills Creek Watershed Association for over five years, serving on the technical committee for the majority of that time.

Mary McIntosh is an attorney in Columbia, S.C. Before starting her own practice, she was Legal Counsel and Vice-President with Wachovia Bank, and before that was Assistant Vice-President and Trust Officer with South Carolina National Bank/Wachovia Bank. Mary has a B.A. and J.D. from the University of South Carolina and a Master of Laws in Taxation from Emory University. She grew up on Forest Lake and now lives in the Rockbridge Road area in the watershed and is a member of the GCWA’s education committee. Mary became a member of the GCWA because she is interested in seeing the Midlands grow and prosper in an environmentally friendly and positive manner.

D. Michael Kelly, Attorney, Owner of the Mike Kelly Law Group. Currently serves as Tanglewood Homeowner Association President and has long been active as a volunteer in the Midlands.

Mark Watson is an alumnus of the University of Kentucky. Majoring in Geography led him to a career in computer cartography, more commonly referred to as geographic information systems (GIS). Relocating to Columbia, SC in 2006 he began providing contracted GIS services for Shaw Air Force Base and in support of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. In early 2012 he joined GCWA and began offering his GIS knowledge to assist with mapping and presentation materials while serving on the Technical Committee.

Ann Yancey grew up in Virginia and came to South Carolina to attend college. She received a BA from Converse College in Spartanburg and an MEd from the University of South Carolina. Ann retired from USC where she worked as a Conference Coordinator for the Division of Continuing Education prior to becoming Director of Leadership South Carolina. She and her husband, Michael Tkacik, live in the Cross Hill Neighborhood where Ann serves as Secretary to the Neighborhood Association. She is an active volunteer with Carolina Wildlife Care and is a transporter for Kindred Hearts.

Rob Robertson was born in Columbia and grew up playing in many of the creeks, ponds, and lakes that comprise the Gills Creek Watershed. He is a graduate of Clemson with a BS in Management. Rob has been involved with the GCWA since 2009 and has been very helpful with clean ups, paddling events, and especially Wine for Water since its inception in 2010. Rob’s wife, Meredith, is an attorney with Riley, Pope, & Laney. Their daughter McRa is six years old and in the first grade at Brennen Elementary. They are members of Trinity Cathedral.

Lyle Darnall is the Managing Director of Edens, where he has worked since 1999. A graduate of Auburn University with a BS in Business Administration and Finance, he is responsible for expansion of the company’s assets in South Carolina and neighboring states. He is also a member of the International Council of Shopping Centers. Edens has been a strong supporter of the Gills Creek Watershed Association and have several assets in the watershed including Trenholm Plaza, Shoppes at Woodhill, and Cross Hill Market.

Elliott Powell - Past Chair of the Gills Creek Watershed Association
Mr Powell is president of First Sun HR & Benefit Solutions, and was born and raised in the Gills Creek watershed. He currently resides on Lake Katharine. He was a founding member of the Gills Creek Watershed Association established in the early 1990s, served as the secretary of the original effort, and was the first chairman on the reorganized effort.

Program Coordinator

Erich Miarka -
Erich is a graduate of the Master of Earth and Environmental Resource Management program at the University of South Carolina. He specializes in water resources and recently worked with national river conservation organization American Rivers. He has lived in the Gills Creek Watershed for over six years and is an active member of the outdoor recreation community. You can typically find him on one of Columbia's waterways fishing or kayaking with his dog.
